CHALLENGE OUR STUDENTS FACE IN SCHOOL TODAY

Some students struggle with completing Math and English assignment, submitting homework on time and staying focus in class. However, these struggles maybe a part of a greater problem that is not clearly seen by parents, guardians, and educator.

Challenges students face in school are poverty, homeless families, child abuse and neglect, bullying, violence, obesity and malnutrition, sex and pregnancy, suicide, drugs and dropping out.

Poverty is a major problem in Tanzania. The gap is widening between the upper class and the lower-class sector of the society. The socioeconomic status of children and their families has a profound effect on children’s education, even in a county that pride itself on free education from primary to secondary school, equal opportunity and fair treatment of all.

Unemployment is a factor in poverty for some, but many are employed and still live below the poverty line. The majority of poor children come from families headed by a single female/ male parent, grand parent or extended relative. They often come from homes that are no adequate in terms of shelter, and they may live in dangerous communities. In their neighborhood, they may be exposed to drugs, violent crime and prostitution, and they may turn to these types of activities themselves at an early age.

Children living in poverty often struggle to be provided with enough quality food and medical coverage.

Children living in poverty often come to school without having enough sleep lead to fall asleep in class and without having had breakfast.

Children living in poverty may not be able to pay for field trip or other extracurricular activities that might expand their experience base.

Children living in poverty transportation might be an issue for some and they miss a great deal

of school.

Children living in poverty they may be teased about their clothes; they may have difficulty making friends or fear of participating in an activity in front of the class.

Children living in poverty may turn to be runaways from home often experience abused secondhand family violence, smoke, neglect to sexually abused and or physically. Even may been kicked out of their home.

Children living in poverty for girls may miss school every month in time of their menstruation as

they can’t afford to buy pads.

The heart behind Kiluvya day was to come together and contribute to the emergency fund for students at Kiluvya secondary school which is under care of school matron. Emergency fund will function to those students who are in need as we have mention the challenges above which are faced by students.

 Also celebrate the day with the students, acknowledge the students who put efforts in the subjects and in extra curricular activites. Students show case their talents, games and we share meal together and listen to them.

Students heard from other NGO’s which attended Kiluvya day, they lift their spirit in school and also in their home environment.
